Huygens’ Cosmotheoros
Concert, with Ere Lievonen (Fokker organ) and mystery guest!

Melle Weijters, brilliant (jazz) guitarist and artistic coordinator of the Huygens-Fokker Foundation, has been dreaming for years of a theatrical concert around the imaginary world of Christiaan Huygens. Melle Weijters, the man of the Meantone Blues, has already garnered much admiration for his microtonal guitars. Now he offers this dream show that leads from the 31-tone system to the science fiction of David Bowie’s Space Oddity. The perfect soundtrack to the world of Huygens.

The legacy of Christiaan Huygens, son of the poet Constantijn, was not only limited to the 31-tone system. Undoubtedly inspired by the harmony of the spheres of the ancient Greeks, he wrote Cosmotheoros in which there was room for life on other planets and where music according to the 31-tone tuning would be the sound of the universe. This idea is reflected in works by Huygens and imaginative minds such as Charles Mingus and Gustav Holst, while Melle Weijters explains Huygens’ musical ideas in his own work.

“It is an honor to introduce the last piece of this concert, of this festival. It’s a collective improvisation in Just Intonation based on the addition chords of Adriaan Fokker. For the mathematicians and numberphiles – and I know you are here – it is in 433-limit Just Intonation. And that is a significant number. 4’33 is the name of the bar downstairs and I hope to see you all there after the concert!”
